PORTSMOUTH — Amy DeStefano is kicking off her new year with a new heart.

The beloved Portsmouth resident, who had been patiently waiting for a heart transplant since 2009, finally got her wish on Dec. 31.

..

Lisa DeStefano said that sometime during the 32-month wait, her sister had signed up for a new trial transplant procedure called Heart in a Box. The procedure, which is widely performed in Europe, is relatively new in the United States, she said.

The "heart in a box" uses a machine to keep hearts beating for hours on their own after being removed from cadavers. The process is unlike traditional heart transplant methods, where the organ is saturated with preservative fluid and stashed in a cooler packed with ice.
